UCSC Genomics Institute

The UCSC Genomics Institute is on the leading edge in the study of the human genome. Several initiatives lie within the umbrella of the Genomics Institute, two of which are the Computation Genomics Lab (CGL) and the Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Undergraduate Summer Internship Program.

The Goal

These two initiatives needed a way to represent their dynamic and ever-growing bodies of information in a way that is fun, approachable, and invites participation from a wide audience. They also needed a platform that students and researchers could easily use and update.

My Role

UX Designer and Front-End WordPress Developer as an employee of Ginger & Sage Design Studio.

Discovery

We researched students who were either considering the internship or utilizing CGL's research, and found that what they needed most was to access and understand information as rapidly as possible. The BD2K site needed to communicate value and itineraries, while the CGL site needed to share a catalog of recent reports.

Solution

We implemented Wordpress platforms customized with HTML/CSS/JS that students and researchers could easily use and update.
